Greece Holiday Accommodation
Greece and the Greek islands are one of Europe's favourite destinations It is a peninsular and mountainous country unique in charm and beauty. Greek islands Aegean, These islands are in general less popular than those of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese though they are no less beautiful and in may ways have retained their Greekness more than the very popular islands. Cyclades The Cyclades islands are the most well known of the Greek Islands and include Santorini and Mykonos which are the two most popular islands in Greece. Dodecanese The Dodecanese chain of islands are the southeasternmost and some of the islands are close enough to Turkey for day-trips. Ferries leave Pireaus in the late afternoon and arrive in Rhodes some fifteen hours later after stopping in Patmos, Kalymnos, Leros and Kos. Some of the islands have a well developed tourist infrastructure with fancy resorts and packed beaches while others are perfect for those who seek an escape from the masses. Ionians The Ionian islands of western Greece remind many people of Italy, particularly the island of Corfu. They receive more rain than the islands in the Aegean and so are greener. Known for their beautiful beaches, unique cuisine and package tourism they are not as easy to reach from Athens since there are no boats. Many people fly, some direct from their home countries. There are however ferry connections from several ports in Western Greece. Saronic The Saronic Gulf islands are the closest to Athens and can be reached in an hour or less by highspeed in the case of Aegina and Agistri and are great for daytrips and overnights even in the winter. Sporades The Sporades are in the northwest Aegean between the island of Evia and Mount Pelion. Known for beautiful beaches and rich vegetation they can be reached by ferry or highspeed from Agios Constantinos a couple hours north of Athens or from Volos, except for Skyros which must be reached by Kimi in Evia. In the summer there are connections to Thessaloniki and the Cyclades but generally going from any other islands to the Sporades means going through the mainland.
